Angels star Shohei Ohtani finishes with the best-selling jersey

NEW YORK – Shohei Ohtani’s surge in popularity is even more evident in jersey sales.

Ohtani is Major League Baseball’s best-selling jersey this season, the first time a Japanese player has topped the list. On Friday, the league and players association released the top 20 list, based on sales of Nike jerseys on MBShop.com since opening.

The Los Angeles Angels two-way star beat out Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr., the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge and San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Houston’s Jose Altuve, Seattle’s Julio Rodriguez, Atlanta’s Matt Olson, Houston’s Alex Bregman and the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout rounded out the top ten. Trout has finished in the top 10 every year since his rookie season in 2012.

Ohtani has finished in the top 10 twice before (2018, 2021), but is nowhere near first.

With a .304 batting average, 44 home runs, 95 RBIs, 8 triples and 20 steals, he became the favorite to win American League MVP honors. The right-hander also had a 10-5 record with a 3.14 ERA in 23 games.
