Warm weather continues, but rain chances will be returning

Grant Thursday evening weather forecast

Temperatures continued to be above average over the weekend. Rain and thunderstorms will return, especially on Saturday.

Mid- to high-level clouds began moving into New Mexico on Thursday, but that didn’t stop some areas from breaking record high temperatures this afternoon. Skies will clear overnight. We’ll wake up to sunny skies across the state Friday morning.

Isolated storms will return to areas along and east of the Rio Grande Valley and along and south of Interstate 40 Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, temperatures will continue to be above average. More thunderstorms are expected Saturday afternoon. There will be a chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms along and east of the Continental Divide, with a few strong to severe storms in the eastern half of the state. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be the biggest threats. Heavy rainfall is even possible in southern New Mexico, where a flood watch will be in effect Saturday.

Saturday afternoon’s storm will end early Sunday morning. Another isolated round of storms is possible Sunday afternoon, but farther north and east; closer to the Colorado-Texas state line. Wind gusts will also be expected across the state this weekend, with gusts possibly reaching 30 to 40 mph.

The weather will become quieter and cooler next week. For now, the chance of rain next week is also slim, with the best chances in the northern mountains and eastern New Mexico. Temperatures will even be below average by the middle of next week as it finally feels more like fall.
