LeBron James will return to No. 23 next season after switching from No. 6

Not only is LeBron James returning for a 21st season, but he’s also wearing his original jersey number.

The Los Angeles Lakers revealed on Saturday that James will return to jersey No. 23 next season by tweeting a photo of James from behind, emblazoned with his name and number on a gold jersey.

James has alternated between No. 23 and No. 6 since entering the NBA wearing No. 23 with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. He finished sixth last season as the NBA’s career scoring leader, but that number has now been retired by the league following the death of Boston Celtics Hall of Famer Bill Russell.

James’ agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN that James decided to make the switch out of respect for Russell.

James said Wednesday at the ESPY Awards that he will continue to play next season.

The Associated Press reported.
