Joel Embiid hopes to win an NBA title ‘in Philly or anywhere else’

Joel Embiid has made it clear he wants to win an NBA championship. Whether or not this will make it to the Philadelphia 76ers remains to be seen.

Speaking with Maverick Carter at the Nonstop Film Festival, the reigning MVP made a surprising comment about his possible future with the 76ers.

“I just want to win a championship,” Embiid said when asked about his next move. “Whatever it takes. I don’t know where that’s going to be, whether it’s in Philadelphia or anywhere else.”

Embiid’s comments surprised many, as he has yet to speak publicly about leaving the Sixers, who drafted him in 2014. While Embiid missed the first two seasons of his career due to injury, Philadelphia has established itself as one of the league’s top teams as the center has been in the lineup for the past six seasons.

Embiid is obviously a big part of that, having been an All-Star in each of the past six seasons and winning the MVP last season. However, the 76ers have yet to reach the Eastern Conference Finals during Embiid’s tenure.

Embiid and the Sixers took a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Celtics, even winning in the fourth quarter of Game 6 at home. But their offense struggled late, scoring just five points in the final six minutes of the game, allowing the Celtics to stretch the score and force the game into Game 7. Three days later, the Celtics beat the 76ers in Game 7, a game in which Embiid scored just 15 points on 18 shots.

The loss ended Doc Rivers’ tenure in Philadelphia, with the Sixers firing the coach and hiring former Raptors head coach Nick Nurse to replace him. It could also be the last game Embiid and James Harden play in a 76ers uniform. The 2018 MVP opted into the final year of his contract, but has reportedly requested a trade elsewhere, despite Embiid publicly calls for his return.

All of this has fueled some insider speculation about Embiid’s future in the City of Brotherly Love Speculation on whether he wants to leave Philly in the near future. Fox Sports NBA contributor Yaron Weitzman, who wrote a book about Embiid’s early seasons with the Sixers, thinks the star center’s recent statements carry weight.

“Embiid is not a talker,” Weitzman tweeted. “His words always have a purpose.”

Embiid, 29, is still under contract with a player option for the 2026-27 season. But, of course, he could always request a trade before then.

One thing that seems clear about Embiid’s future is that any decisions he makes will be championship-oriented.

“I just want to have a chance to make it happen. I want to see what it’s like to win the first championship and then you can think about the next one. It’s not easy,” Embiid said. “It takes more than one, two or three people. You have to have good people around you. Like myself, I try to get to that level every single day so that I can achieve this.

“Every day I’m working toward that goal. That’s the mindset I’ve always had.”
