2 MDC inmates die in unrelated incidents

Two inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center have died in unrelated incidents.

The first inmate who died was Elliott Scott Sanchez, 57, who was booked into MDC on Sept. 15 at 11:11 p.m.

At approximately 1:59 p.m. on Sept. 17, a medical emergency code was called regarding an inmate in medical distress. MDC personnel, along with UNM Hospital’s medical team, responded and conducted life-saving measures.

Sanchez was transported to UNM Hospital by ambulance and pronounced deceased at approximately 3:29 p.m.

The second individual was Charles P. Jaramillo, 37, who was booked into MDC on June 15. He was approved for the MDC Community Custody Program (CCP) on Sept. 15 and died just three days later on Sept. 18.

On Sept. 18, Mr. Jaramillo was scheduled for an alcohol test at 10 p.m. MDC CCP officers received notification that the alcohol test was not conducted. Officers attempted to send Jaramillo a message through his GPS monitoring system to contact the CCP office, but the message was not acknowledged or returned. The lack of response prompted CCP officers to track Jaramillo to his most recent location on Yale Blvd SE. Upon arrival, CCP officers found the Albuquerque Police Department on scene. The CCP officers were told Jaramillo had already been pronounced deceased at approximately 11:40 p.m. Because this occurred outside of MDC, the facility currently has no additional details about this death.
Both deaths will be investigated by local law enforcement. Consistent with standard protocol, these incidents are also under investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards.

The official causes and manners of death will be determined by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
