16-year-old dies 10 days after West Side shooting

Date:

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Police say a teen is dead after a shooting on Albuquerque’s West Side, and are now naming the alleged shooter. On July 21, officers arrived to the area of Kimmick and Valiente near Paseo Del Norte for a shooting.

Police say two groups of teens were hanging out at the spot known as “The View,” and 20-year-old Daniel Mayorga got upset with one group and shoved a teen.

Joshua Torres, 16, stepped in and shoved Mayorga back and punched him. Police say that’s when Mayorga pulled out a handgun and shot Torres in the eye.

Police confirmed Saturday that Torres died on Thursday as a result of his injuries. Mayorga told police he wasn’t the shooter but had been drinking and smoking weed and heard the shot.

Mayorga was arrested after the shooting and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Police are now working with the District Attorney’s Office to change his charges following Torres’s death.
